Classes begin for those who seek to become Catechumen and those who wish for full Reception on Wednesday September the 17th at 7pm.
A catechumen is an unbaptized person preparing for baptism, confirmation, and communion. The word "catechumen" first appeared in the second century. A catechumen is an apprentice -someone who is learning about the faith from those more experienced at it while practicing the faith to the extent possible. Catechumens receive a sponsor to help them grow in the faith. They attend sessions to learn about Christianity. They participate in prayer with other catechumens and with the parish. They imitate the good moral behavior of the Christian community. They serve others, putting their faith into action. A person may remain in the catechumen for a short or long period of time. It depends on how much formation they need.
A Baptized person who wishes to become Catholic does so through the Rite of Reception of baptized Christians into the full communion of the Catholic Church. Baptized candidates are often put in formation together with unbaptized catechumens. But their situation is quite different. As baptized members of the Body of Christ, they need the specific formation that prepares them to be received into the Catholic Church, whereas unbaptized catechumens need a broader formation to become a follower of Jesus Christ. Of course, some catechumens have already had more Christian formation than some candidates, so the preparation is best personalized for each individual.
We are blessed to have our Religious Education classes for our children already baptized (as infants) in the Catholic Church. For children who have not been baptized and are beyond the age of seven, we have a special program known as the Rite of Christian Initiation of Children. After a number of years of study and worship, they are baptized, confirmed and receive Eucharist for the first time on Easter morning. For those interested in the RCIC or the regular Religious classes for the children, please contact Mrs. Trinidad at 759-2286. For the Adult classes please call the parish office and ask for Father Doug 759-2400 or call Deacon Sherman at 531-2186
